Homemade sparkling water bread: a 2-ingredient recipe

Recipe by Riri's Recipes

Did you know you can make soft homemade bread with only two ingredients? This sparkling water bread recipe is perfect when you crave fresh bread without using yeast. Simple, quick to prepare, and requiring very little effort, it will quickly become a staple.

Delicious with salted butter, jam, or even peanut butter, this bread also pairs well with soups, salads, and cheese boards.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups self-rising flour
  • 1 ½ cups sparkling water
  • 1 pinch of salt (optional)
  • ½ tsp olive oil (optional)

Preparation

  1. In a large bowl, mix all ingredients until you get a sticky dough. This is normal: the dough is wetter than traditional bread dough.
  2. Cover the bowl and let rest in a warm place for 4 to 8 hours, until the dough doubles in size.
  3. Preheat the oven to 230 °C (450 °F) with a Dutch oven inside.
  4. Gently fold the dough over itself and add a little flour if necessary to form a ball.
  5. Place the dough on parchment paper, then into the hot Dutch oven.
  6. Bake for 35 minutes with the lid on, then remove the lid and continue baking for 15 minutes, until the crust is golden brown.
  7. Let cool for about ten minutes before slicing.

Tips

  • A sticky dough is completely normal: avoid adding too much flour.
  • The longer the resting time (up to 8 hours), the lighter and airier the bread will be.
  • A Dutch oven helps achieve a crispy crust and a soft interior.

Storage

Store your bread in an airtight bag in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. To restore its softness, reheat it for a few seconds in the microwave, then toast it or bake it in the oven to regain a crispy crust.
